A happy baby

How I Can Help

My mission is to support each family’s agency to make their own action plans and I will help you advocate for your chosen approaches. While my services are most often tailored to families who choose breastfeeding on demand and gentle sleep strategies, I will work with each of my clients by providing evidence-based information and the emotional support they need to honor their decisions about feeding and sleeping. Think of me as a neutral, objective, and educated thought partner there for you as you figure out your unique parenting approaches, systems, and routines. I am fully vaccinated and CPR Certified.

  1. Do you wish to breast or chest feed and are you facing challenges in achieving this goal?
  2. Are you not settled on your sleep strategies given the confusing and contradictory advice you’ve received? Did you have a plan that worked and now everything has changed?
  3. Are you concerned about how you will handle work responsibilities, or returning to work, especially in terms of feeding? (I cannot provide you legal advice but will discuss your rights with you and help you decide on a plan.)
  4. Do you have questions about or need support with newborn care needs or baby-related household tasks? Would you benefit from talking through various strategies and decisions?

Elizabeth Grossman, Brooklyn Based Doula About Me

After over 30 years as a civil rights attorney, I decided to become a postpartum doula. integrative lactation and feeding specialist, and infant sleep solutions consultant. I did this because:

  1. I love babies and want to support their families, especially new parents, during the beautiful and scary first days and weeks,
  2. I remember how alone and confused I felt when I had my first child, and how hard it was to sift through conflicting advice and stick to how I wanted to care for my son. Now, I use the wealth of knowledge I’ve developed since then to help new parents (1) figure out how to make the early days and weeks focused on joy and, (2) manage their stress about feeding, sleeping, and work responsibilities,
  3. Postpartum doulas are a powerful resource in the health justice movement, and providing these services has been shown to improve parental and infant health, help parents feel more secure in their new roles and changed family dynamics, and improve racial and other disparities in postpartum care.

Testimonials

Elizabeth is exactly the kind of person you want around after having a baby—warm, calm, nonjudgmental, and incredibly helpful. From the first day, she just got what needed to be done. She made me feel comfortable enough to open up about other things I needed, like advice about anxiety related to safe sleep. She’s also amazing with newborns. You can tell she truly loves what she does. The way she cared for my baby was so warm and natural that I instantly felt she was a “safe person.” Honestly it felt like family or someone I had known for a long time coming over to help. Beyond that, Elizabeth is a wealth of knowledge on all things motherhood. I loved being able to pick her brain about random things and have conversations with her woman to woman/mom to mom. That connection made a tough, isolating time feel so much easier. I’m truly going to miss working with her, and I can’t recommend her enough to anyone expecting or adjusting to life with a new baby. – R.N.

My husband and I are first time parents. Navigating all the “firsts” and challenges that come with parenthood, including our first sleep regression, can be beautiful and also challenging. Elizabeth met us during the regression and was so supportive and helpful. She was very warm, welcoming, and helped to fine tune our nighttime routine. She cheered us on and helped us get through. Once the regression was over, Elizabeth helped us establish a daytime and nap routine. She even helped support me in finding activities to get out of the house and engaged in our community again. Elizabeth was wonderful working with our son and can’t say enough great things about her as a doula, professional, and person. – K.B.

I was feeling so discouraged and honestly ready to give up on breastfeeding, but Elizabeth completely changed that. She took the time to educate me, encourage me, and make sure I felt truly comfortable and supported. She asked thoughtful questions about my pain level, showed me new techniques, and helped me gain confidence again. I’d highly recommend Elizabeth to anyone planning to breastfeed — her patience, knowledge, and care make all the difference. – K.F.

Elizabeth is a calm and knowledgeable presence that immediately soothed both me and my baby. She is a great communicator and reliable, thoughtful and dedicated. – V

Working with Elizabeth was one of the best choices I made after having my baby. At a time when I was hearing so many different opinions, she was a steady and grounding presence who always guided me back to what is evidence based and reliable. She has a broad range of knowledge across postpartum recovery and newborn care, and when something came up that was outside her expertise, she knew exactly where to turn and who to connect me with. I felt supported, reassured, and never alone. I am very grateful for her care. – Y.B.

I was really struggling with breastfeeding and in just one session together Elizabeth made me feel reassured, confident and empowered. Her advice and knowledge completely changed things for me. Now I feel confident feeding my baby. I would recommend Elizabeth to anyone looking for a kind, compassionate and knowledgeable postpartum doula and lactation consultant. – C.B.
